Tips For Interstate Travel For Dog And Cats

Moving dogs and cats from one state to another – be it Sydney to Melbourne or vice versa – is not as traumatic as you may think, as long as a few simple things are done in advance.

  • Dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old before travelling by air.
  • Do not feed your pet on the day of your trip as they will travel better on an empty stomach.
  • Cats are incredibly sensitive and will know something different is happening – their instincts will tell them to hide. Therefore, on the day of travel keep your cat confined inside the house, in a safe area, where they will not be able to escape prior to pick up and travel to the airport.
  • We do not recommend sedation, as this can often do more harm than good. We have found that when dogs and cats have been sedated, they can become very disoriented and take longer to settle into their new environment. See our section of FAQs for more information on sedation

Always inform us if your cat or dog has any medical problems, or behaviour issues, and if the vet has treated them. This is most important, as we will then know what will be an appropriate course of action, if necessary.

Tips For Domestic Travel For Birds

International and Interstate pet transport is made a lot easier when a few steps are followed before they travel.

Most birds will need a permit to go into Western Australia. Any exotic birds that require a permit in their existing home state must have a permit in the State to which they are travelling. We will need a copy of the permits.

Birds cannot be transported in their usual cages. They must travel in an IATA approved travel crate, which can be provided by Animal Travel if required.

Birds and hot weather do not mix! If you are travelling to a warmer climate, or during summer, the birds need to travel in the cool of the day. Once they arrive, make sure that there is an area where they can be kept cool, but not in direct line of an air conditioner.

Tips For Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Ferrets

Moving rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets domestic pet transport is simple as long as a few steps are followed before they travel.

On the day they are due to embark on ther journey, be it for international, domestic or interstate pet transport within Australia, keep your rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets confined inside the house, in a safe area, where they will not be able to escape prior to pick up and travel to the airport.
